Skin Filling is a procedure used to improve the appearance of facial wrinkles. It is a cosmetic treatment that basically replenishes your skin with different components like chemicals or some fats extracted from your own body.

Wrinkle Fillers are injected underneath the skin — right underneath the wrinkle itself — and act as a physical support system for the skin. Wrinkle Fillers add temporarily foundation to the skin and collagen and hold up areas that have become indented.

Wrinkle fillers are especially effective on deep lines or wrinkles – the ones you can see even when your face is fully relaxed. They can be used on any indentation in your skin, such as scars. The first injectable skin fillers appeared in the 1970’s. Bovine collagen was one of them but its short-lived results and high level of allergic reactions limited its potential.

Later, human bioengineered collagen – which is collagen derived from human cells – was approved by the Food and Drugs Administration for treating facial wrinkles, acne scarring, and lip reshaping.

Although human bioengineered collagen is an improvement over bovine collagen because it does not pose an allergy risk, dermatologists still sought a filler that could safely and effectively replace the naturally-occurring sugars in the skin, called hyaluronic acid, the other primary component lost in aging skin.

Even if skin fillers are a good wrinkle and deep folds treatment, it may be more effective to treat them with cosmetic surgery, such as a facelift or browlift.

Injectable fillers are sometimes used in conjunction with facial surgery procedures; however, injectables alone cannot change facial contours the way surgery can. The results of skin fillers are not permanent, as some of the injected materials can be metabolized by the body.

In some individuals, the results may last only a few weeks; in others, the results may be maintained longer.

The outcome of a treatment with injectable fillers is never completely predictable and depends of patient’s healing abilities. Researchers believe that age, genetic background, skin quality, and lifestyle are determinate results.

A number of filler materials are used for facial-rejuvenation purposes. They include:
Fibril: A gelatine powder compound that’s mixed with a patient’s own blood and is injected to plump up the skin (similar to injectable collagen).

Gortex: is a thread-like material that is implanted beneath the skin to add soft-tissue support.

Botox: This skin filling procedure is a controlled injection of the botulinum toxin which works directly into the muscles to reduce muscle activity. Common places to inject include the horizontal forehead furrows, vertical lines between the eyebrows, and “crow’s feet” around the eyes.

Collagen: Collagen is an injectable filler made from cow protein. Popular places to inject include lines between the eyebrows, lines between the nose and lips (nasolabial folds), lines to the side of the mouth, and lines around the lips.

Fat Injections: Fat taken from your own body is used as a soft tissue filler material. Since it is taken from your own body there is little possibility of an allergic reaction. Fat is taken from areas such as your abdomen, buttocks, or thighs using a small needle attached to a syringe. It is important to remember that fat from your own body will absorb some of the fat and therefore repeated injections of stored fat may be needed for optimal results.

Cymetra : Cymetra is injectable but not as a wrinkle filler. It is a soft tissue filler that consists of micronized skin from cadavers as Alloderm does on a skin graft procedure. Popular places to inject include the lines between the eyebrows, lines between the nose and lips (nasolabial folds), lines to the side of the mouth, and lines around the lips. As with other procedures, this filler may have long-lasting results if used correctly. Unfortunately some patients metabolize or absorb the Cymetra sooner than expected.
