How to Prevent a Scar from Forming or Help Erase an Old Scar

Just burned yourself with a curling iron? Or, do you have another burn or cut you’re worried might turn into an ugly scar?

Many times, a scar can be prevented before it forms. If the injury is very severe, the proper treatment can help to lessen the appearance of a scar.

One of the easiest ways to ensure your recent cut or burn doesn’t leave behind a scar is to treat it with a Triple Antibiotic Ointment which contains Polymyxin, Bacitracin, & Neomycin. The ointment can be found in generic packaging at almost any drugstore and is probably best known as Neosporin brand ointment.

NEW INJURY:
(1) Clean and dry the skin.
(2) Spread a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment over the area.
(3) Continue treatment for several days until the new skin forms completely. You should see a gradual fading of the affected area. Even if you stop treatment for some time, try to maintain occasional treatment until the skin is clear. If a scar still results, it should at least have a light and even-toned appearance.

OLD INJURY: An injury which has healed within a year or less, may still become lighter and even out when treated with triple antibiotic ointment.
Try to treat the scarred area as often as possible. Covering the treatment with a band aid or gauze pad overnight can help the skin to begin to re-new itself again.

If you’re consistent, you can improve the appearance of almost any scar overtime using the triple antibiotic ointment.
