How to Heal Scarring From Scratching
Scars occur when your body repairs itself by knitting tissue back together. If you have been scratched, there is a chance that your scar will heal without a trace, but if you want to make sure that you do not scar or if you want to get rid of a scratch scar that has been there for a while, there are steps that you can take. Remember that the sooner you take action, the more likely it is that the scar will disappear completely.
Immediately
Determine the severity of the scratch. If the scratch does not stop bleeding after a few minutes or if it has gone past the second layer of skin, you may need to go to the emergency room. If you can see fat, bone or muscle, go to the emergency room immediately.
Clean the scratch. Rinse the scratch gently with water to make sure that all the debris is removed. This is essential for preventing infection.
Allow the scratch to air out. Some people decide to put a bandage on at this point, but this can actually keep the scratch from healing well. A bandage should be used only if the scratch cannot otherwise be kept clean or if it will continually be irritated by your clothing.
Healing Your Scratch
Check on your scratch daily. If you ever notice puffiness or inflammation, you might have an infection. If you get an infection, contact a doctor immediately.
Wash your hands with water and antibacterial soap.
Apply antibacterial cream to the scratch.
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 every other day for as long as the scar is tender.
Prevent Scarring
Wait for two weeks after getting the scratch to work on reducing the scarring.
Apply a small amount of honey to the scratch.
Allow the honey to sit for five to 10 minutes
Rinse the honey off with warm water.
Repeat Steps 2 to 4 daily until your scar has reduced or disappeared.
