Common Burn Myths

There are many different views on the best way to treat burns at home. Some of these methods are family traditions that have been passed down for generations. However, the benefits of many of these treatments have been greatly exaggerated over time. The following are common burn myths that may actually make a burn injury worse.

1. Using Butter – Cold butter may feel great on burned skin. However, once applied, the substance will heat up and may cause the burn to feel even worse in the long run. Immediate satisfaction doesn’t always mean it’s best for the injury.

2. Using Alcohol – Although alcohol may help clean the wound, the sting will be awful.

3. Placing Cold Meat on the Burn- Anything cold will help cool the burn and provide some pain relief. However, if cold meat is used, it also increases the risk of infection. Burn wounds are highly susceptible to getting infected.

4. Popping Blisters – Not only is this painful, but it increases the risk of infection and scarring.

Even small burns can turn into serious injuries. If left untreated, these burns can become infected with bacteria. Infections may spread, and soon enough an untreated wound may cause a serious illness. There are two main ways to properly treat minor burns. Using a cool (not cold) compress and holding a burn under cool water will decrease inflammation and pain. Taking an anti-inflammatory drug may also help with the injury.

However, if a cool compress and running water doesn’t help the pain, it may be time to head to the emergency room. If you have been burned due to the negligence of another party, there may be compensation available for your injury.
