Boil, Pimple or Cyst?
When you’ve got a red, tender swelling appearing, your first thought is likely ‘pimple’, but that’s not always the case. In this article find out if you have a boil, pimple, or cyst, and what to do to treat them.
Boils
Boils are probably the most painful of the group. This skin blemish starts as a tender red swelling, then gradually develops into a hard, shiny, large swelling with a whitish-yellow center.
Boils are caused by staph infections penetrating the skin’s defence.
If the red swelling is around a hair follicle or sweat or oil gland, it’s most likely a boil.
Pimples
Although pimples can also hurt, they aren’t as painful as boils. This is for a number of reasons, including the fact that they are more often the result of clogged pores and oil trapped under the skin, rather than an infection.
While they both start out small and red, a pimple rarely grows much past the first day or so; a boil, on the other hand, can grow to the size of a walnut!
Pimples clear up on their own after a few days (although it can feel much longer if you have a date or if it is on the end of your nose). Boils take 7 to 10 days on average, longer if you have an immune disorder that keeps your body from fighting off the infection.
Cysts
Cysts are sacs of fluid, gas, and other tissue materials. They are usually lump-like growths, although they can be microscopically small. Cysts that you confuse with a boil, pimple, or other blemish are likely the epidermal inclusion cyst. They won’t have the same red surround with yellowish-white center as a boil. They also won’t go away as quickly as a boil or pimple.
